Harriet Tubman

This week we are celebrating the journey of one of our favorite female heroes, Harriet Tubman. Born into slavery in Maryland in March 1822, she grew up under the restrictions of a slave owning family and yet, as one of the youngest siblings, she found a way to escape through Maryland to Pennsylvania using her skills as an outdoorswoman with tremendous grit. She made her way to Philadelphia with the help of a few Underground Railroad “conductors” and her knowledge of the stars and the outdoors. What makes her story so incredible is that she was one of the few slaves who made it “North” and then risked her life 18 more times to walk back to her plantation to rescue family and friends and slaves who were ready to escape. In all those years she never lost a slave, or got captured herself. Her story is just beginning to be told. In her honor we will include her story in our Underground RailroadTour and Luncheon on Saturday March 9, 2024 at the Gibson House Manor, 210 Liberty Street Jamestown PA Historic Visitor’s and Event Center from 11:30-1:45 pm. The Manor is one of the last sites in Mercer County where you can see and learn about the Underground Railroad and walk the floors of the 1856 estate that was designed with 11 secret hiding places as an Underground Railroad safe house. Please call for reservations since space is limited. 724.456.4983. —Friends of the Manor Charitable Trust
